Looking to start your own clothing brand or an apparel company? You’ve come to the right place!
“Looking back now, everyone was a fan of cartoons and it makes perfect sense for our brand but, in the beginning, it didn’t seem like it went with our other designs.”
If you’re afraid of failing because you’re thinking of taking a risk by venturing into doing something new that might not go along with your original plans, then you must know about the story of Odd Sox. Keep on scrolling to read more about their success and story!
What is the name of your brand, and who founded it? What is the meaning behind the name of the brand? And how did you know that you were sure about the name?
Odd Sox was founded by Ahmad Akar. The brand was started to completely overthrow the standards in socks. Our intentions are to create something new, creative, and unique. Considering our socks are different we called them Odd and instead of keeping the plain old “socks” we made them Odd Sox. To show that a change in hosiery is here.
When did you launch? When was the moment that you knew that you’re going to start your own brand? What was that “thing” that triggered you to start it? Did you see something online or did you see a gap in the market and thought to yourself that you are the one to fill that gap?
Launched in December of 2013. We were triggered by seeing a wide open market for sublimated full image socks designs that no one else was doing on a large scale. Our idea started as a hustle that turned into a full blown business within a month.
How would you describe your brand? What category would it be in?
We have been highly popular in high street fashion but our brand is available in many platforms so I would say Fashion in general.
What was your very first design? What was the inspiration behind it? In fact, what is your inspiration for the whole brand?
Our first design ever was a pair of tiger socks. We were looking to create something that spread across both feet to show our latest design and new look that we brought to socks.
Do you remember your first sale? When was the first time that you sold one of your products? Was it your very first design? How many days, weeks or months after officially opening your online store to the public? Was it sold to a friend or a person you didn’t know? How did you feel about this first sale?
Our first sales came in immediately. There was a huge following for our designs because no one had ever seen socks done in such a unique and fun way.
Was there a collection or design that you didn’t think would pop as much as it did?
There was a lot of doubt in the beginning on whether cartoons would be a hit. After selling out in the first week we knew it was a huge success. Later on we went on to have big deals with Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon.
Our first collection was urban streetwear themed because that’s what we loved to create and had a following in. Our designer Matty mentioned Spongebob would be a great seller and we had it produced and within a week it was sold out. Looking back now, everyone was a fan of cartoons and it makes perfect sense for our brand but, in the beginning, it didn’t seem like it went with our other designs.
How did you get the brand out there? There are a lot of brands that come out almost every single day. What did you do to get recognized and show that your brand is different? Did you use social medias to get in touch with your customers? Was there a specific medium (Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, etc.) that you believe that got you to connect with them more? And, why is that?
Instagram was our biggest outlet but not just because we were promoting on there or connecting with customers but mainly because we were finding out that celebrities were buying our socks and posting them on their pages. In our first 2 months we had gotten recognition from Snoop Dogg and T.I. for our dope designs. To have great exposure from people we look up to that was huge to us.
Are you full-time on your brand? When did you know that you got something going on? What I mean is that from that point on, you’re going to start focusing more of your time to the brand? Or was it right from the very beginning?
From day one everyone was on board to grow and make this more than just your average brand.
Before releasing your very first collection or design, or before launching your brand, what were you doing? What was your occupation? Were you in a similar industry?
Each member of Odd Sox has been a part of fashion in one way shape or form. Some of us had our own brands, some owned clothing stores, there was a big mix of culture and style that brought this Odd group together. Not to mention we all grew up together.
For any business, they say that the first year is the hardest. Did you go through anything that got you demotivated? Was there ever a time that you thought that it wouldn’t work? Did anything happen that got you to this state? Then, how did you overcome this?
There will always be bumps in the road to success. If you care enough about whatever you are working on, you will focus on it and work for a solution. We had plenty of things try to stop us but we love what we do too much to let any of them stand a chance.
What is the biggest achievement that you or the brand had so far? Was there a specific event that was so significant that it felt very fulfilling for you and the brand?
We have been recognized by multiple media outlets, endorsed by many athletes and celebrities, thrown so many amazing events, it’s tough to pinpoint one specific event.
So, what’s next for the brand? Do you have some ideas already for the next collection or design? When will it be out? Or is there anything else that we should be on the lookout for? Something that might surprise us?
Never let anyone know your next move. We have new collections dropping every month. Be on the lookout for it on oddsoxofficial.com.
Do you have any advice or tips for aspiring brand owners? Do you have anything to say that could help them whenever they’re about to get to the point of giving up?
If you are willing to put in the work to create something on your own don’t ever stop trying to improve and success will follow. Hard work always pays off.
Finally, do you have one motivational quote that you always remember and say to yourself whenever you’re not feeling 100%? What would that be?
“Invest in yourself, Follow your dreams.”
