Looking to become a fashion blogger, a fashion stylist or a fashion influencer? You’ve come to the right place!
“I do remember seeing people who got 500 likes, and being like “OMG I can’t believe they got so many!” Now it’s weird because that’s now my average likes per photo!”
All you have to do is to be determined and tenacious, and, eventually, what you’ve been in awe of will happen to you, too. Nikki is definitely an example of this, so read on to know more about her work ethic and story!
What is your name or what should we call you, and how long have you been a stylist/blogger/influencer? Do you remember the year (maybe the day and month, too) that you started?
Hi! My name is Nikki Davis, and I have been a style blogger/influencer for about a year & a half now! I started my blog on a whim in the beginning of October in 2015!
Do you have a specific style?
Hmm.. I do have quite a tendency to change up my style.. haha. It usually stays around a very simple, chic-street fashion sort of look. I definitely think my look has gotten more simple and classy within the past year however!
Why did you want to become a blogger or an influencer? Was there anything that happened that triggered you to become one? Did you see something or someone online, or was it because of your avid interest for fashion?
Haha! So funny, I feel like I always get this question! Honestly, I thought it just looked like a fun hobby, and potentially an “in” to the fashion community. I never thought I’d make a lifestyle, nonetheless a job out of it! I’ve always had a passion for fashion, but I never thought that it would necessarily play out into a career. I was mostly just in to shopping! But who knew that could kind of be my job!
How did you start? Did you start with social medias first, then made a site? Or did you start off with a website together with the social medias?
So I initially started with Instagram. I had created a website as well, but I initially started out showing off all my looks & lifestyle through Instagram. My Instagram attracted the most attention!
Which website are you using for your blog (WordPress, Blogspot, etc.)? Do you have a reason as to why you chose this website? If so, what were they?
I started out using WordPress, and I just hated it! I was like “Oh man… there’s gotta be something better.” And, there was! I’m actually obsessed with Squarespace now. It’s SO easy, clean and manageable. So happy I made the switch, best decision.
Which social medias did you use in the beginning? Which one do you think was the most helpful one in terms of reaching your audience? Why did you think that it was the best medium to use?
I mostly started out on Instagram. I created a Facebook page, and every once in a while posted on Twitter, but now it’s fully Instagram! Instagram was definitely the most helpful in reaching my audience. For myself, I like to focus on my photos rather than what I have to say about it. So for me, since Instagram is purely photos, that’s what worked best for me!
Do you use more social medias now compared to when you were just starting? If so, which social medias have you added?
Not really! I use only Instagram and my blog mainly. I haven’t seen much progress from any other social media channels. I have thought about potentially using Facebook more, so I might start doing that!
How often do you post on your social medias when you were in the beginning stages? Was there a specific time that you thought was the best to post?
Starting out, I had no idea what I was doing.. hahah! I remember being shocked when someone told me that there was a “prime time” to post photos, and that posting everyday was normal. In my head, I was like “How in the world am I supposed to keep up with that…” But now it’s just like a routine! Now I post twice a day, one in the morning, around 10:30, and one at night, around 7:30!
What camera were you using when you started? Did you have a photographer or you took the photos by yourself? Would you be able to compare the quality of the photos from when you were just starting and to how it is now? What were the changes?
When I first started out, I did a lot more shoots with photographers than I do now. But now, I’m very picky on my style, so when I do shoot with photographers, I’m more careful for their style to match up with mine! I definitely see changes in my photo editing skills… hahah! A huge change.
Was there a specific blog post or social media post that made you go “Wow!” because of the amount of likes, follows or interactions it received? What was that post?
There isn’t specifically one post that made me think that, but I do remember seeing people who got 500 likes, and being like “OMG I can’t believe they got so many!” Now it’s weird because that’s now my average likes per photo! It’s crazy seeing stuff like that.
How was your first year of becoming an influencer? Others have said that the first year is the hardest, for any business in fact. Was there ever a point that you didn’t think it would work? Did you ever get demotivated? If you did, what happened and how did you go through that obstacle?
Pretty rough, for sure. I don’t think I really started trying to make blogging work for like a year in! I think I’m just now really trying to vamp up my blog. It takes a long time to get started, and it’s definitely very discouraging. You don’t see much progress or anything! There were a lot of times I wanted to give up, and I actually did for a few months. But, I remember, after being out of it for a few months, I really missed it! Then, I also saw these famous fashion bloggers, and I realized it was my passion, and there came my motivation!
As an influencer, there must be a lot of times that you were contacted for a collaboration, do you remember the first time you were sponsored by a brand? Do you remember which brand it was and what it was that you received?
YES! 100%. I remember I was in Chelan, and got asked by “Sand Cloud Towels” to be an influencer. I was just in awe. I was like “OH MY GOODNESS. They want ME to work for THEM.” I loved every bit of it. Getting the free product. Giving a discount code. Doing a photoshoot for the brand. I felt so legit.
Receiving that from the brand, how did it make you feel? For many bloggers, that must have been such an achievement! Did you celebrate when it happened or was there anything that you did in particular to celebrate
Completely! I felt like I must’ve been doing something right. I remember texting all my close girl friends and my parents being SO excited. Now it’s crazy the amount of collaborations I get asked per day!
Do you have any advice to the future influencers/bloggers/stylists? Do you have any few words for them that they could keep in their minds to keep them motivated or inspired?
Yes, I do! Try hard, and really never give up if you’re passionate about it. Meet with as many people to ask questions, and network your little booty off! Be prepared for the first year to be very slow, but look forward to what can potentially be in store!
Finally, do you have a motivational quote that could surely motivate you whenever you are feeling demotivated? If there is, what would that be?
Yes, absolutely! So many times I would complain like “I can’t do it, it’s too hard, too draining”, and my fiancé would tell me his motto, which eventually became mine – “Go Get It.” That’s all. Just “Go Get It.” And I work every day to “Go Get It.”
